wing chun to eyes

wing chun to eyes

It’s amazing how the universe works. Just as another example of “ask and you shall receive” – this year I had been asking the universe to give me a fight scene in a feature film in Asia before my birthday in November. I kept pursuing my goal and working but it seemed like chances were slim. Suddenly in mid-November I get a call from the director of this film and he asks if I am available to help with fight choreography. After we worked out details — the exact day I officially arrived at the studio was Nov 22nd — 1 day before my birthday. Pretty interesting how everything worked out. =)

Without giving away too much of the story, it’s essentially about a kid who learns wing chun to help him overcome obstacles. The movie’s storyline is definitely not like Ip Man and is meant for a younger audience… though I think all ages could still check it out.

This particular movie situation was quite interesting. When Antony (the director of “Wushu – The Young Generation”) and I got involved with the project the movie had actually already been partially filmed. In fact a good amount had been shot, but towards the final cut the executive producer realized the action was severely lacking… and since it was a martial arts movie it was supposed to have super action. This is where we came in.

Before I continue any further I must highly thank and appreciate Antony for having faith in me as a first time action director for a feature film. Antony has worked as a stuntman in Australia and has directed a movie with Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan as producer so it was a truly a great honor to be working with a professional at his caliber who also gave me a lot of respect and freedom with my ideas. Speaking of Sammo and Jackie.. I also want to mention another of the Seven Little Fortunes – Yuen Wah (the landlord in Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle / villain in Dragon’s Forever) is one of the actors in this film.

Since we were re-shooting all the action plus a decent portion of the drama we had a lot to do. On top of that we had a smaller budget than the original crew, less resources, and no time. I didn’t even know this until I arrived in Guangzhou, but apparently I had to design roughly 10 fights to be filmed in about 10 days… because in total we had 14 days to film and 7 days to do pre-production work (including new casting, location scouting, set design, fight choreo, etc). Also we had almost no stunt guys originally and the lead was a 12 year old.

But first…

alf with wing chun sifu

alf with wing chun sifu

…we had to learn a little wing chun. So fortunately I actually studied a little wing chun here and there, but of course not on the level of 7th generation wing chun master. We had a wing chun master on set as consultant and sifu of the wing chun movie. He was a bodyguard for a prince and also at one point taught in London where Bruce Lee visited when he was in London. The sifu was 67 years old but his arms were as strong as an oak tree.

Now that we had the wing chun training in order we had to bring in the rest of the artillery.

Enter Alberto and Kyle.

Both of my friends had been working on feature films in China and I knew they were perfect to help out on this expendables style intense mission which required 10 fights in about 10 days. These guys had so many different fights to do in such a short time that I’m definitely glad they were able to come out.. without them it would have been a totally different experience.

I mean after all we wouldn’t have been able to add in some dope JCVD moves like this!

How we party in Guangzhou

I actually got more than I bargained for (in a good way). I was coming under the expectation that I would be simply designing the fights. Aside from a few shorts I had never directed a feature film, much less operate a Red One camera.

operating the red one camera

Because timing was so tight, we had so much to cover, and I knew all the action… just a few days into production we sort of broke into 1st and 2nd units. I learned to operate the camera to follow the action on fight scenes.. and directed for the action scenes. This made my head start spinning in terms of camera angles and so much more.

A few surprises along the way included:

A visit from Mark Moran and Ruhi.

I was really happy Mark visited in Guangzhou. He happened to be stopping through the area and then was able to drop by set. I showed him the studio, the green screen room, and we had a nice dinner with Ruhi, the actors, and the director.

Also a visit and cameo by AliveNotDead’s very own JuJu Chan. Speaking of cameo’s.. the director, fight coordinator, and 3rd AD all make a little cameo as well. =P

Alfred and JuJu

Another fun fact: During the period of the shoot 3 birthdays passed – mine, the director’s, and the main star Xiao Long’s birthday. Happy birthday Xiao Long!

Xiao Long's birthday

Xiao Long's birthday

As I write this, we are a few hours away from being completely wrapped. The past 3 weeks have been intense and non-stop. We all worked over 12 hour days and everyone is starting to feel the wear and tear… but I think for the time we had to work with we got some good results. I hope people will enjoy the action.

takedown caught on camera

There were some ups and downs with the producer side with last minute changes with story, plot, characters, etc.. but it can’t be completely unexpected. Overall I had a great experience working with the Ace Studio team and learned a great deal. I developed fun and lasting memories with my kung fu bros Alberto and Kyle. It was also really interesting to go from all this tai chi training to learning wing chun – both happen to be the top 2 on my list of traditional Chinese martial arts styles that I  wanted to learn… so of course it’s AMAZING when your job is to learn those martial arts styles. I am going to end with an awesome quote that Antony said on set today.. sometimes I get so excited about what I’m doing and think to myself.. so I’m learning all this cool stuff “…AND I get paid for this??!”

Alfred and Michelle Yeoh in Singapore

Alfred and Michelle Yeoh in Singapore

Here is another back dated post about the first time I went to Singapore. This was immediately following our trip to Vietnam so the main reason I was here was for a Red Cross promotion of Volunteerism. Michelle Yeoh was also in town to support the campaign… hence the picture above.

Now just because I was in town for work doesn’t mean it was all work and no playyyy :) After the event ended it was roughly time for the lunar new year aka my one official holiday time of the year according to China work holidays. So anyways I had a few days in Singapore to sight see and hang with friends.

Ion Orchard in Singapore

Ion Orchard in Singapore

Fortunately pretty much the one homie I know in Singapore (McLangan) is tearin up the nightlife scene with his club Filter among other venues that he promotes at… so pretty much every night was event packed. The first night I rolled out to Ion Orchard and there were a few bars around there.. after which we hopped around to some other events.

Alfred Kristen Traci in Singapore

I randomly ran into Kristen who I knew from ucla and who I also met up with in Beijing. Apparently this girl is just globe trotting it up too and was also mutual friends with Langan. After hanging out, we all went to go eat. Diggin the late night food in Singapore.

McLangan Grubbin after a night of Winning

I don’t remember too much of the night because we went to a lot of venues, but I do remember that was some tasty chicken.. solid late night food! I also remember at one point we had a bottle of Dom Perignon from bottle service and since we were hopping around and it was just way too much we hid it in a bush (?!!) I don’t know what we were thinking.. I knew we weren’t going to come back for it.. and we sure didn’t. At food John was sad and kept saying something like.. I can’t believe we put Dom P. – Life’s Trophy… in a bush!

Night Safari in Singapore

Night Safari in Singapore

The next day Andy, my coworker, planned out a night safari trip with his other friends as well. It was pretty awesome. Going to the zoo is pretty cool for me already, but a NIGHT safari.. that was even cooler.

Crocodile Hsing

Crocodile Hsing

When you get there they have a few shows (like with fire or snakes or other animals) and you can even pay to have fish eat your skin! haha… after the entrance area you can enter on this safari car just like in Jurassic Park where you enter the safari and are sometimes only separated from the animals by a little puddle of water or a fence.. then there are points where you can get off the car and walk along certain trails.. then at certain checkpoints you can hop back on the car.

Fruit Bats on Singapore Night Safari

Fruit Bats on Singapore Night Safari

The whole safari was pretty cool, but a highlight of the adventure was having bats fly all around your face! On part of the walking tour you can enter these caged areas where one door only opens if the other door is closed. You can enter into these bats’ living quarters where bats the size of your head (not including wingspan) fly all around you.. they are HUGE fruit bats.. hella freaky looking.. but also really amazing and interesting at the same time.. walking in there I think I felt 1/100th of what Batman felt when he first fell into the bat cave…

Singapore Night View

Singapore Night View

The rest of the trip I checked out Raffles Square and my friend Cat showed me some sights including the Merlion which is Singapore’s mascot. It has the head of a lion and the body of a fish. I went to catch up with Cat and see what she’s been up to. We went to chat at Max Brenner – this chocolate bar.. they had realllly reallly tasty chocolate milk. I think to call it “chocolate milk” is like an insult in their eyes.. haha.. it wasn’t cheap either.. but it was really high quality rich tasting chocolate.

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

Sands in Singapore

Sands in Singapore

Andy and I also visited the semi-recently built Sands Casino in Singapore. This casino is made to attract foreigners income and not locals.. the Singapore government made it such that if you are a Singapore citizen it costs like 100 Singapore Dollars to enter so they check your passport at the door. I also hear they have a sweet infinity pool at the top of the Sands, but I didn’t have time to check it out. Andy won a few bucks playing black jack.. at first I didn’t want to play black jack but since he sat down I played a few hands… as usual I lost in black jack. I don’t think that game has EVER treated me well.. which is why I almost never and should never play more than 3 hands. We left after maybe 45 minutes of playing and checking out the Sands.. then went to eat some high class restaurant pizza. Right before ordering Andy realized we left our player cards back at the Sands.. and since Andy was waiting for a friend.. I ran back to get them (it was just around the corner). When I went back in.. I felt this calling.. it was time – to not lose.. haha. I played basically any other game besides black jack and immediately started winning again. I played 20 minutes of roulette and then was pretty much back up again.. then I called it a day and went back to eat some pizza. So yeah, this pretty much summarizes my first time in Singapore. Not long after this trip I headed back to the US.

Meeting with President Clinton

alfred jet clinton

This is just too exciting for me to not post. Last week in HK I had the honor of meeting former president of the United States – Mr. Bill Clinton. It was a very cozy event with limited invitees for the Clinton Global Initiative.

When we first got there people mingled for a bit. As the event formally started Pres Clinton came out and gave a brief speech. I had a chance to hear him speak about 6 years ago at Royce Hall at UCLA, but this time I was literally arms distance away. He warmed the crowd with his usual very personal and exceptional speaking ability. Following his brief speech people continued to mingle. He made his way through talking to all his guests. When he got to Jet they gave each other a big hug and discussed the future of philanthropy in the world. The atmosphere was that they were both interested in getting work done and were both very action oriented. Thus Pres Clinton agreed to Jet that next time he was around in Beijing if it was convenient schedule-wise he would speak at a One Foundation Philanthropy Research Institute forum.

As a college student who had taken speech, our professor pointed Pres Clinton’s speaking skill, which is just another reason for why I went out of my way to hear him speak when he came by UCLA. I had always wanted to meet him up close and shake hands with him.. so this well definitely be another great memory for me. That’s also why I’m blogging about it.. so I can record all the fast paced things going on.. I feel like lately it’s kinda easy to overlook everything that is going on and just get caught up in the details of setting up the events and helping with planning that I might forget to take a step back and realize that I am accomplishing things that I have always dreamed of.

Speaking of dreams.. I finally also watched Inception the other day. I’ve been so busy but that’s been a movie I really knew I would like.. and I did! The movie brings up interesting points about reality and what we can and should accept. I think a good message is to always enjoy the journey and not to get too caught up on the destination only. What do you guys think about the ending?

48 Hours of Fun in Taiwan

Last week I had the fortune of squeezing in 2.5 days in Taiwan! I essentially had 48 hours in Taiwan because the other half days were occupied by actual commute time. My parents happened to be in town so I asked my boss for a few days off. Fortunately he graciously accepted my request…. and so I was off to Taipei! My mom actually won a free tour to Taiwan from some raffle (she tends to win raffles all the time) so my dad bought a ticket and that’s how they ended up in Taiwan.

Madame Tusades HK

Madame Tusades hk wax figure

I had just finished a wax figure opening ceremony at Madame Tusades in HK and then was continuing work on a film in Hubei when I found out that they would be in Taipei at the last leg of their tour. Since we were just about to switch filming locations I squeezed in 2-3 days to see my parents in Taiwan.

When I first got there I met up with my sis – Sarah! We’re wushu “bros” and every time I visit Taiwan I always crash with her and kick it with her whole fam (minus Cheryl who is not in Taiwan) so we always laugh that I’m basically part of the family.. with that said… right when I landed I met her up at this HUGE family dinner of hers. Her dad’s cousins who hadn’t seen each other in 30 some years were there.

schang family dinner

schang's family dinner

Then we went back to the pad to regroup and figure out the plan for the night. Even though Schang had work the next day she was down to hang out since I was only in town for 2 days. She is awesome. Another person that was awesome was Ngan – my scwa wushu teammate. So Sarah, her cousin, Tim, and Ngan planned to meet up for some karaoke at cash box! We were thinking it could potentially be more fun if we had more people, but it was kinda last minute so we rolled over.

Jerry Liau, Jack Tu, Jackie Chan

Jerry Liau, Jack Tu, Jackie Chan

Guess what? As we were waiting outside waiting for Ngan some guy walked by me and quickly said.. “alfred” and i turned my head.. and it happened to be Jerry! It was pure chance that I ran into him. The week before we all met up for dinner. He is part of the New Seven Little Fortunes – a tour group that performs with Jackie Chan. I met him through my friend Jack Tu who is on that team and who was also the winner of the BTV show The Disciple. So Jerry was waiting for a few friends as well and we ended up all sharing a room and having a huge group karaoking the night away. haha. We had only planned to stay out till midnight but since everyone started singing we forgot about time and ended staying out till about 3am.

Lunch with Ngan

Lunch with Ngan

Even though we went out until 3am I made plans to get breakfast with Ngan the next day. I had to make the most of my 2 days! I met Ngan at 101… but totally got mixed up that Hua Na Wei Xiu aka the Neo19 place was a little ways off.. so we had a little exercise while meeting up for breakfast. Fortunately Ngan is super chill so didn’t mind the mix up too much. We met up at this breakfast place I like to go to for lounging, surfin wifi, and chatting. We chatted over pancakes and milk tea. We had some really great conversation – talked about random things but also some very insightful things. Within a few short minutes Ngan had a very thorough grasp of what I was doing and where I was heading with my goals. It was pretty amazing how quickly she was able to assess my situation. We also talked about personality types and recognized that understanding yourself helps you understand the best decision to make.

Eating Rice in Taiwan

Eating Delicious Rice in Taiwan

Since we chatted for so long it became lunch and I HAD to visit this delicious “lu rou fan” (a taiwanese rice dish) mom and pops Taiwanese hole in the wall by where I used to live last year. After lunch I took a few steps and found a hair salon and got my hair cut.. then was off to meet another friend.

Environment Friendly Chopsticks

Environment Friendly Chopsticks

I’m starting to go green. On set we’ve decided to use our own chopsticks and bowls instead of using the disposable ones. I think this is awesome because for ONE thing.. if you use your own chopsticks and bowls your meal taste better than eating out of a paper bowl with splintered wood chopsticks. Another thing is that it’s more sanitary to use your own utensils. Most importantly though is – if you think about how many paper cups, plates, plastic spoons, wooden chopsticks are used PER DAY for a cast and crew of a few hundred. You easily go through a thousand spoons and plates per week! This goes back to www.storyofstuff.com – I am strongly against the increased consumption of our consumer society. I think we all need to scale back on consumption and I am happy to start with using my own bowls and plates. I know I went off on a tangent there.. but it’s something I get pretty heated about. So anyways, I went shopping for environmental objects with my friend and then she had to run to go teach a dance class.

I also saw this random pic while shopping.

For dinner I met up with some colleagues I worked with on a star tour! Sarah and D met us up as well. We ate at a “re chao” place that was also more local and a chill hang out spot. Good for having some down home taiwan style food and beer. We hung out for quite some time and eventually ran into Tim and his friends! It shows how small a place Taiwan is because at night I was planning on meeting up with Tim anyways.

Re Chao in TW

We rolled to Tim’s friend’s house and did a little pre-partying and then headed to Luxy. I had no preference on where we were going that night since I was more down to just hang out with everyone… since Tim promotes at Luxy that’s where we ended up. This time I didn’t have to flip over any lasers to get in.. but they had lasers there anyways.

Luxy Lasers

Luxy Lasers

The next day despite staying out late I woke up super early again (sarah had work too so she was up early).. and I spent a good 4 hours on my business. I was up at 7 and before I knew it.. it was 11. I took a shower and all that and by then started getting pretty hungry. I saw Leeway online so I said ‘yo’ lets get some lunch.. and he was like ‘yo’ i want to go workout. So we did both. After we ate and rested for a bit.. he took me to this community gym near his place. I showed him this HIIT Cardio program I’ve been workin on.. while we were warming up on the bicycle machine I said “hey u wanna try this HIIT cardio program? its pretty crazy but u might die.. im not sure though..” and then he looked at me like “what??” then i said “but hey! itll be fun!” so he said okay. Normally I go through 14 drills. Let’s just say we only got to the 4th drill… haha…

I’ll let Leeway give u his feedback himself.. or u can just look at this pic.

Leeway after A Cardio Session

Leeway after A Cardio Session

Aside from his death cardio workout we had a really good chat about where we both are in our careers in entertainment. He updated me on his band Cool Silly and the progress he’s made since I left Taiwan in 09. I look forward to more awesome jams from Cool Silly. I also look forward to more clips of Tony holding a gun.

By the time we finished hanging out it was about time to meet up my parents! I took them to Kan Pai because that’s where I celebrated my birthday last year. I thought we could have some beers and chat.. and we did. The meat tasted fattier than last year… maybe it’s because I’ve been eating healthier or maybe it was just more oily this time.

i-baked

i-baked

After dinner I hung out with my parents a little more at Tong Ling night market and then parted ways for a bit to go check out my friend Ivy’s new cookie store called i-baked. It was kinda late when I got there, but amidst customer’s coming in and out we talked about a lot of business ideas. She also caught me up on what I had been missing out on since 09. Since I had left she finalized her cookie recipes, set up a physical store, and designed all her logos and flyers, and etc. I was pretty happy for her and her accomplishments. I always like seeing people hustling, using their brains, and moving up! She also added fuel to the fire on this idea I’ve been moving forward on. It’s been taking me quite some time, but I think things are coming together. My goal will be to have it ready to roll by the end of this year. (If you know a patent attorney out there, let me know.)

Ivy's dogs at her Cookie Store

Ivy's dogs at her Cookie Store

The next day was my last day in Taiwan before flying back to Beijing. I woke up and caught up on a little work before heading to Breeze Center (Wei Feng Guang Chang) to meet my parents, uncle jerry, aunt tan, and sarahs dad for lunch. We ate some good Shanghainese food and I was off to the airport. On the way to the airport we did stop by i-baked again since the cookies were so tasty and also since my uncle wanted to talk to Ivy’s partner who is an animal rescue volunteer.

Well that’s it for my 48 hour taiwan trip. It was awfully action packed just the way I like it. There were tons of other people I wanted to meet up with but simply did not have enough hours in the day! I hope I will be back soon!

Sam vs Alfred

Fight Practice from Pitch Films on Vimeo.

Filmed this right before I left for China with my good buddies Sam Tjhia, David Brocca, and Pej Peik. We got Sam on the action, DBrocca on the cam and cuts, and Pej on the gym usage.. and me on the receiving end of Sam’s fist =P

Dave just finished editing this and I think it came out great given that it was more of a practice shoot for some things we had in mind and just for fun.

Watching this 3 months after we shot it is strangely making me miss/think about home. It just reminds me of all my friends I would train with and people I would kick it with back in LA. I totally miss waking up during that time where I was only managing my own business and I could roll outside and see the sun… then hop in my car and drive to the gym to do some wushu/stunt practice. I remember sitting with my legs stretched out with my gym bag flung to the side and a bottle of liptons ginseng green tea. Then after some warming up I get to hit some heavy bags and drill kicks… anyways, hopefully I’ll be back at that when the time is right =)

As for the practice fight, I had a much more complex choreo and storyline even planned out, but we only had like 1-2 hours to shoot since there was a class in the afternoon and people had other things going on that day… I was going to add takedowns, elements of mma/jiu-jitsu, and more acrobatics… anyways it was just a quick fun thing… regardless, I want to thank Sam for coming out on short notice and just training/messin around.. then gotta thank Pej for lettin us use his gymnastics studio.. and Dave already knows he is awesome.. I mean.. just listen to the music he used in the background! He really put the clip together with some good editing skills.

Yesterday I went to the Channel 10 TV station near Kunyang in Taipei. Famous Taiwan TV show host Zhang Fei interviewed me on my achievements on winning the 10th World Wushu Championships on the show “Zhong Yi Da Ge Da”. I’ve seen this guy host many shows even while living in LA. My aunts, uncles, parents, and grandma has had him on their tv back at home in the states. In any case, it was a fun show. I did a wushu performance and interview. There were actresses and singers on the side that comment along with Zhang Fei and Zhang Fei himself makes a bunch of jokes and comments. All in all, interesting show.

I got on the show so randomly. I guess it wasn’t completely random, but it just happened all of a sudden. My mom referred me to a contact in Taiwan and I sent over my demo reel and information.. and before I knew it next day I was called in to be on the show.

It airs Saturday at 8pm Taiwan local time, channel 10. If someone can TIVO this for me, that would be awesome!

This poster is platered all over Toronto right now.

This poster is platered all over Toronto right now.

I am at the 10th World Wushu Championships. Flew in with my folks from Cali to Buffalo and then drove in the Canada.

Spent the first day sleeping at a hotel with my parents then the next day we went to Niagra Falls!!! It was pretty cool. I’ve been there before, but it’s definitely a cool sight. I was sorta frustrated that day because when we flew in our baggage didnt make it on the flight, but then the next day we had to go pick it up. Fortunately I got a free $50 travel voucher since our bags were delayed. I was also frustrated because I wanted to train, but there was nowhere to train and my parents wanted to visit Niagra Falls which I had already been to when I was a kid…. However once I got there and saw the magnificent sight.. I was still glad to have gone and checked it out. Ate with my parents at Fall View. Very nice view!

Fast forward to later that day – I HAVE to THANK my DAD! It was late in the day and he drove me from Niagra to downtown Toronto to drop me off near the competition site and so I could meet up with my high school friend Mike Jurka. It was about a 2 hour drive with traffic so in total he probably drove 3-4 hours roundtrip. They are going to meet up with me in toronto tomorrow.. but since they had booked the hotel in niagra for 3 days they had to go back to Niagra that night. Thanks! That’s love right there. Anyways, I met up with Mike who I haven’t seen in quite some time.. but once we met up it seemed like we just picked up right where we left off. Jurka hasnt changed much. He was cool enough to let me crash at his place and also show me around a little. We also checked out his work which is a start up called Bump Top (http://bumptop.com/) Cool software that lets you bump around software and reorganize your desktop in a new way.

Today after coffee with Mike, I got to my hotel the Delta Chelsea to find a wonderful gift “The Art of War for Executives” left by Cat for me upon registration at the front desk. She is so thoughtful. It’s the little touches that really make a person stand out! Thanks Cat! Slowly the US Team arrived and gathered throughout the day. I also met international buddies Wu Di, and Hong Kong Colin.. and many other friends from Brazil, Canada (of course), Taiwan, etc.

The US training session was at 5:30pm. At that time only Sarah, Joana, and I were here for the training. I ran through basics, nandu, short sections of all my forms (cq, js, qs) then I did a full form. No problem! Booyah! I’m taking it!

Before I go to sleep. I leave you with this poem:

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are.
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

I know this is really not a big deal, but in some small way it is to me.. and also I know I am going to sound like such a noob when I post this, but I dont care.

After the multiple airings of the deadliest warrior Shaolin vs Maori + the Spike TV Aftermath interview, I’ve had 1 person on the bus, 2 people at a convenience store, and multiple people at work recognize me. Also, I had my first legitimate request for an autograph!

I’ve always wanted to inspire and motivate people just like how I was inspired and motivated by certain actors/martial artists in movies and just feeling like I was moving closer towards that made me feel pretty cool. =)

That is all.
