Beast Mode

Beast Mode

I’m going beast mode is a phrase I commonly used during the 2009 US Wushu Team Trials. What is going beast mode?

During practice beast mode often occurs 45 min after warm up while I’m into my last sections before I do full forms. Beast mode can also occur on your third section after you have done 2 full sets already.

Beast mode is a switch that can be turned on and off in the user’s mind. Typically it converts the user from a sane modern civilized human into a primal animal with beast strength and rage. This switch must be learned to be controlled and not used at the wrong place or wrong time. Typically for me it is turned on at full power during competitions and even during parts of the warm up phase. Some such as He Jing De have so much beast that beast mode is maintained on while performing normal functions such as walking around or putting on an everyday shirt.

Being able to turn on beast mode is a requirement for opening gates.

There are eight wushu power gates. These gates are

2009 US Wushu Team Trials is tomorrow. Dennis, Will, and Sarah stayed over at my house last night. This morning I woke up at 9am and then walked through my forms once each with Zou lao shi at Omei Cupertino.
Then we all went to Lees Sandwiches for some grub. At 1pm we got to Li Su Dong’s school for warm ups. Fu Bi De helped me make a dope spear which I will be using on Sunday. After warm ups we went home to get changed and drew lots at the Hilton. My order of events are:

Saturday
Changquan – #5 out of 34
Taijiquan – #2 out of 6
Taijijian – #4 out of 6
Jianshu – #14 out of 14

Sunday
Qiangshu – #8 out of 14

Had a delicious pasta dinner that my mom made along with some carrots and celery. Going to make my tai chi music now and then get some rest. Been training 2 years specifically for this. Going to do my best tomorrow.

Currently thinking about what Damarques Johnson (from the Ultimate Fighter US vs UK) says before a fight.

Something to the effect of-
God thank you for letting me fight. I don’t pray for victory, I just ask that I fight to the best of ability and thank you for letting me have the chance to display my skill.

Wushu Carpet

It’s Thursday, 2 days before the competition, 1 day before drawing of lots. I am flying up north tonight. I am telling myself to focus on wushu, but if you know me by now I have a couple other things I have to do today. I figure I’m ready so there’s nothing else to think about. I’ll just do my best.

Anyways, here’s my Wed. recap:

Wushu
Warm up, light basics, longfist and straight sword form back to back no stop, then spear form. At the end of practice did my full tai chi form as well. I didn’t practice tai chi sword due to time. I made 0 mistakes nandu-wise on all 4 forms! THAT ROCKS!!
I planned on doing 2 full forms only, but Coach Rickie made everyone competing do 3 so I didn’t complain. 2 or 3 .. same thing. Monday and Tuesday I basically barely worked out so Wed I HAD A TON OF ENERGY!!! I felt a surge of power and wanted to do massive 720 butterfly twists across the gymnastic spring board carpet.
